Improvement Projects (from west to east):

Completed and Funded Improvements

  1. Shared-Lane Pavement Markings: The first shared-lane pavement markings (sharrows) in the City of Wilmington have been installed along Market Street between N & S Water St, S Front St between Market St and Ann St and Ann St between S Front St and S 15th St. Completed 2010.

  2. Bicycle Wayfinding Signage: Bicycle wayfinding signs have been installed along Market Street between N & S Water St, S Front St between Market St and Ann St and Ann St between S Front St and S 15th St. These signs have also been installed along the recently completed Wood Dale Drive bicycle lanes and Donna Avenue multi-use path. Completed 2010.

  3. Bicycle Parking: Bicycle parking has been installed at the intersections of Market St at N Water St, S Front St at Dock St and S Front St at Orange St. This parking is well signed and two of the locations are in-street, making it much more accessible. Completed 2010.

  4. Ann St at S 3rd St Pedestrian & Bicycle Crossing: A new pedestrian and bicycle crossing of busy S 3rd St (US 17 Business) has been constructed by the City of Wilmington. This crossing includes a partial median closure, curb bulb-outs, high-visibility crosswalks and the first rectagular rapid flash pedestrian beacon in North Carolina. This project is funded jointly by the City of Wilmington and the Residents of Old Wilmington neighborhood association. Completed 2010.

  5. Ann St Two-way Conversion: On March 23, the Wilmington City Council voted to restore Ann St between S 3rd St and S 5th Ave to two-way operation in order to accomodate the bicycle boulevard. Completed 2010.

  6. Ann St at S 4th St Stop Sign Reversal: In order to facilitate travel along the bicycle boulevard, the stop signs at the intersection of Ann St at S 4th St will be moved to the S 4th St approach. This reversal is supported by recent traffic counts conducted at the intersection. Prior to the reversal, an interim all-way stop will be installed for 30 days. Underway.

  7. Ann St at S 5th Ave Pedestrian & Bicycle Crossing: A new pedestrian and bicycle crossing of S 5th Ave is in design and scheduled for bid in summer 2010. This crossing will include a partial median closure, curb bulbouts, and high-visibility crosswalks. This project is funded through a Fit Community 2009 grant from the North Carolina Health and Welness Trust Fund. In design.

  8. Assorted Brick Repair: Prior to April 10, the city will repair assorted bricks along Ann St between S 5th Ave and S 6th St. This brick repairs will provide a more even travel surface for bicycles along the bicycle boulevard. Underway.

  9. Ann St at S 7th St Stop Sign Reversal: In order to facilitate travel along the bicycle boulevard, the stop signs at the intersection of Ann St at S 7th St will be moved to the S 7th St approaches. This reversal is supported by recent traffic counts conducted at the intersection. Prior to the reversal, an interim all-way stop will be installed for 30 days. Underway.

  10. Ann St at S 10th St Stormwater Street Retrofit: The City of Wilmington has worked with North Carolina State University to design a stormwater street retorfit for the intersection of Ann St and S 10th St. These improvements will include curb bulbouts with stormwater biotreatment facilities. These bulbouts will provide traffic calming, environmental and aesthetic benefits to the bicycle boulevard and the immediate area. The city is currently seeking grant funding to construct these improvements. In design.

  11. Colwell Avenue Multi-use Path at Dawson Street Pedestrian & Bicycle Crossing: A new pedestrian and bicycle crossing of busy Dawson Street was completed recently. This crossing includes a refuge island and high-visibility crosswalks. This project was funded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Completed 2009.

  12. Park Avenue at Independence Boulevard Pedestrian & Bicycle Crossing: A new pedestrian and bicycle crossing of busy Independence Boulevard is in design and scheduled for bid in summer 2010. This crossing will include a refuge island, high-visibility crosswalks and pedestrian push-buttons and signal heads. This project is funded jointly by the City of Wilmington and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. In design.

  13. Wood Dale Connector: New bicycle lanes along Wood Dale Dr between UNCW and Wrightsville Ave and a new multi-use path along Donna Ave between Wrightsville Ave and the Park Ave multi-use path were completed recently. These facilities provide a new connection between the River to the Sea Bikeway and the university. This project was funded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Completed 2010.

  14. Wrightsville Ave Bicycle Lanes: New bicycle lanes along Wrightsville Ave between Military Cutoff Rd and Eastwood Rd have been designed by the City of Wilmington. These facilities will be added through a resurfacing project expected to be completed in 2010. This project is funded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Under construction.

  15. Wrightsville Beach Interim Improvements: Interim improvments to the River to the Sea Bikeway were installed to improve connectivity and safety for cyclists traveling east from the Heide-Trask Drawbridge to the public access beach at the end of Salisbury Street. The new signage and pavement markings route eastbound cyclists along an Old Causeway Drive bike lane, under the drawbridge and up the boat launch exit via a second bike lane, then on to Pelican Drive as a parallel alternative to Salisbury Street. This project was funded by the Town of Wrightsville Beach. Completed 2008.

Dawson St Refuge Island

In 2009, the Dawson Street pedestrian and bicycle crossing was constructed by NCDOT.

 

Wood Dale Connector

The Wood Dale Connector under construction in early 2010.

 

Causeway Dr Bicycle Lanes
Bicycle lanes were installed on Old Causeway Drive in the town of Wrightsville Beach in 2008.
